Content description

In the courses of the module Art in Context, the main focus is on content and theory analysis. Students choose from a wide range of lectures and define their main foci each semester. The internal and external seminars, lectures, symposia, etc., allow for an in-depth analysis of content in the context of current art discourse, positions on history and theory in art and media, as well as in the field of art and research.

Zoos make animals visible. By exhibiting, editing, framing, and fixating on the living beings they detain, zoological gardens activate specific modes of looking and being looked upon, which transform the status and nature of the displayed animals and condition the ways in which they are observed, conceptualized, and considered. In this seminar, we will investigate how the conditions of exhibiting living animals in zoological gardens create specific modes of observation and inquiry—for viewers during their leisure time and also for artists who choose this environment as a source of intellectual, affective, and creative input. We will attempt to comprehend the conditions, possibilities, and limits to such engagement, finding responses to and critiques of the sites of exhibiting wildlife.
