THE GEOPOLITICS OF CARE : THE WORLD EMERGING FROM THE POSTCOLONIAL CONDITION
This symposium will pay special attention to areas of the world where the artistic production goes hand in hand with the reclamation of a voice, freedom, and also the narratives of liberation after colonial occupation.
Focusing on art practices informed by feminisms and decolonisation in the Middle East, Africa and Asia we will be addressing the challenges of a definition of contemporary art that is still very dependent on the West and of artistic practices that are either excluded from the canon absorbed by the global art platforms which tend to ignore local complexities and homogenise the margins. Stressing the distinctiveness of women’s emancipation in localities that involve specific experiences in relation to gender, religion, tradition and modernity may help us to understand how also art, as a practice, as a language, may become more diverse, more able to encompass the needs of every specific context. The permanent re-interrogation of the essentialising categories of culture is a central part of this symposium.
Students are expected to read the materials that will be distributed beforehand; to actively participate in the discussion; to research and look after examples of the subjects exposed in the symposium in their immediate context; to be attentive at the cultural and contextual diffe-rences that exist in the different countries.
