Content description

The pool seminar, «Deep Time» can be considered a continuation of the seminar, “Different Every Time”. At the center again, is our comprehension and incomprehension of time, our handling of time and our conditioning through different time regimes. Under the concept of “Deep Time” a term coined by Scottish geologist James Hutton in the 18th century, we too engage with time processes that go beyond a human time horizon to the planetary and the geological, a supra-human time. The starting point of the seminar is a hike in the Sardona region of the Canton of Glarus, in whose tectonic arena the folding of the Alps becomes clearly visible in the Glarus thrust (Glarner Hauptüberschiebung). Walking in the mountains allows for the tempo and temporality of stone and deep time processes to become visually and physically perceptible.

In the course of the seminar, artistic and theoretical positions dealing with the phenomena of deep time, planetary or supra-human time concepts, are considered and reflected upon. We will also pursue the question of what a non-anthropocentric understanding of time could look like; what comes after our time, what traces of the Anthropocene must and can be erased and how existence can and should be inscribed in it.

In addition to reflection and discussion, the method of self-experimentation whereby we develop different tests within the group, is used to critically question and undermine our culturally influenced linear understanding of time and to cogitate on and sharpen our perception of it.

Remarks: for the hike, we will be in the mountains walking for several hours, please prepare accordingly – good shoes are essential.
