Innocence: a symposium and a workshop

The notion of “innocence” is not an easy one. Already at first sight one is confronted with a certain uneasiness. How can we propose a term like this in a time like ours? On the other hand, how can we not appeal to a notion like innocence in thinking about the status-quo of the discourses on political and cultural identity, or on the very nature of theory—that recurrence to the same critical paradigms? We already know that is not only culture that should define thinking, but also new thinking forms, which are emerging from nature or animal studies or science and art.

Innocence, yes. It has nothing to do with morality here. It names the complex operation of challenging the old ways of understanding the function of art, and the old assumptions about experience and perception. It is—actually—the radical expansion of perception: it is not only us who feel; we are felt by beings and machines who are inviting us to introduce the term innocence.

Oh! Some decades ago we often talked about “openness.” But the metaphor is not strong enough for the effort we need to make in order to turn around our ideas of experience, consciousness, and the way art is a thinking that absolves and transforms perception. Art is perception not because it is a producer, but because it is the organ where consciousness is sensed differently, as well as nature and gender.

Innocence here is introduced as an “after-critically thinking form.” Or, better said, innocence is proposed here as a transitional attitude toward a new philosophy, one that is not modern but that is not yet there either.

This conference is motivated by the desire to start thinking aloud—with different thinkers, artists, scientists—about the importance of being exposed, of absorbing different ways of exploring the sensing of the world. The conference takes place on the first day of a three-day meeting, and while it is primarily intended for the participants of Master students (CH Pool), it is also open to all who are interested.

The second and third days are closed for the groups interested, and are an opportunity to further explore the subject through interaction with particular participants.

This symposium is going to be divided into two parts: a one day conference with presentations by Boris Groys, Kenneth Goldsmith, Natasha Sadr, Adam Thirlwell, Filipa Ramos, and Chus Martínez.

And a two days seminar and intense work with the different thesis presented, conducted by Chus Martínez together with Filipa Ramos.

Deutsche Version
