FULL / COMPLET Stalker Genf: Re-mystification, Time Leaks and Inter-Era Communication with Hunter Longe

In this workshop, we will embark on a series of dérive-style outings from the city center, through the industrial and post industrial outskirts, along the glacial-carved Rhône drainage to visit and commune with various relics of a distant past. From new age to ancient strata, we will follow the pyschogeological contours and temporal vortexes situated in the local environment surrounding Geneva in order to tap into deep time. Stops (to be confirmed) will be made to glean shards of the Tethys ocean at a gypsum quarry, to burn bitumen in a cave and to gather marine fossils. Along the way, we will consider where the material and the spiritual coincide, how the formerly living perpetually influence the present, and the shared evolution of the geological and biological. While beginning to see our everyday surroundings as weird and mysterious, we will discuss panpsychism, neo-materialism, animism, oxidation, compression, alluvial displacement, evaporation, sedimentation, and erosion while unthinking the modern western scientific worldview. 

Though some activities will happen indoors this will largely be an outdoor workshop. Bring walking shoes, preferably hiking boots, a rain jacket, a backpack with snacks and water bottle, a sketchbook, pens and pencils, a phone or camera to take pictures and bags for collecting specimens along the way. If the weather really does not permit walking, we will explore the same subject matter indoors through close observation of various minerals and fossils, as well as mediation and liminal dream exercises and the fabrication of plaster from raw gypsum.

Hunter Longe (born 1985, Oakland, USA) currently lives and works in Geneva, Switzerland. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, and a Master of Fine Arts from Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam, NL. His work is currently the subject of a large solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus Langenthal, up through November 19th, 2023 and duo exhibition with Paulo Wirz at Last Tango in Zurich up through November 11th. Other recent group and solo exhibitions have been at Espace 3353 Geneva (2023); Istituto Svizzero, Rome (2022); Binz39 Zurich (2022); Smallville, Neuchâtel (2021); Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève (2021); PACE Gallery, Geneva (2020); Musée Cantonal de Geologie, Lausanne (2019); NoMoon, New York (2019); Et al. Gallery, San Francisco (2018); LambdaLambdaLambda, Pristina (2017); Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen, Norway (2017). In 2021, a book of his texts and drawings entitled DreamOre was published by Coda Press, and he was a winner of the Swiss Art Awards.

Au cours de ce workshop, nous nous embarquerons dans une série dérive depuis le centre ville, à travers les banlieues industrielles et post-industrielles, le long de l'écoulement glaciaire du Rhône, pour visiter et communier avec diverses reliques d'un passé lointain. Du nouvel âge aux strates anciennes, nous suivrons les contours pyscho-géologiques et les vortex temporels situés de l'environnement local entourant Genève afin de puiser dans le temps profond. Des arrêts (à définir) seront effectués pour glaner des éclats de l'océan Téthys dans une carrière de gypse, pour brûler du bitume dans une grotte et pour récolter des fossiles marins. En chemin, nous nous interrogerons sur la coïncidence entre le matériel et le spirituel, sur l'influence perpétuelle du passé sur le présent et sur l'évolution commune de la géologie et de la biologie. Tout en commençant à considérer notre environnement quotidien comme étrange et mystérieux, nous discuterons du panpsychisme, du néo-matérialisme, de l'animisme, de l'oxydation, de la compression, du déplacement alluvial, de l'évaporation, de la sédimentation et de l'érosion, tout en ignorant la vision du monde scientifique occidental moderne.

Même si certaines activités se dérouleront à l'intérieur, ce workshop se déroulera principalement en plein air. Apportez des chaussures de marche, de préférence des chaussures de randonnée, une veste de pluie, un sac à dos avec des collations et une bouteille d'eau, un carnet de croquis, des stylos et des crayons, un téléphone ou un appareil photo (afin de faire des prises de vue) et des sacs pour collecter des spécimens en cours de route. Si le temps ne permet vraiment pas de marcher, nous explorerons le même sujet à l'intérieur en observant de près divers minéraux et fossiles, ainsi qu'en faisant des exercices de médiation et de rêve liminal et en fabriquant du plâtre à partir de gypse brut.

Hunter Longe (né en 1985 à Oakland, États-Unis) vit et travaille actuellement à Genève, en Suisse. Il est titulaire d'un Bachelor of Fine Arts du California College of the Arts, San Francisco, et d'un Master of Fine Arts du Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam, NL. Son travail fait actuellement l'objet d'une grande exposition personnelle au Kunsthaus Langenthal, jusqu'au 19 novembre 2023, et d'une exposition en duo avec Paulo Wirz au Last Tango à Zurich, jusqu'au 11 novembre. D'autres expositions collectives et individuelles récentes ont eu lieu à l'Espace 3353 Genève (2023) ; Istituto Svizzero, Rome (2022) ; Binz39 Zurich (2022) ; Smallville, Neuchâtel (2021) ; Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève (2021) ; PACE Gallery, Genève (2020) ; Musée Cantonal de Géologie, Lausanne (2019) ; NoMoon, New York (2019) ; Et al.
