Pool 2: Art & Democracy (gLV)

In a world shaped by rapid technological change, political polarization, climate crises, and
shifting social norms, this seminar examines these dynamics through the lenses of theories of
social justice, inclusive societies, and intersectionality. These frameworks give us an orientation
to explore how art challenges power structures and amplifies marginalized voices. Emphasis will
be placed on how art reimagines public spaces and contributes to collective identity towards
more just and democratic societies.

Participants will access readings (via PAUL) from authors from various world regions. On the first day, each participant will present and discuss an article, with guidance provided beforehand. Together, we will create a list of key concepts, which participants will individualize for their projects. We will examine various artistic practices, from studio-based work to collective action, on the second day. On Wedenesday, we will visit the UN “Palais des Nations” in Geneva for a guided tour, where we will see many works of art. Thursday's session will focus on rapid project development, where participants, individually or in groups, will create a project draft, including sketches, visual mapping, tasks, milestones, and budgeting. Friday morning, we will round off the seminar.


About the lecturer:

Dominique Lämmli, artist and philosopher with a PhD in Global Studies, works studio-based and situation-specific and conducts practice-based and theoretical research. Her areas of interest include drawing/painting across media, research methodologies, and working with art in socio-cultural settings. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7171-6263
