Context (Pool) 2: Art & Research

In a 0.5 km radius area around Toni, we will identify specific sites as artistic field investigations: by methods such as walking, collecting, close looking and listening, we explore situated and embodied ways of knowing. How to get to know a place? Or rather: how to learn by and through that specific place? What realities are intersecting on site and what temporalities do interfere? How do we as artists perceive, describe, experience, record, measure and account for a place?

We will approach the city as a site of research, production, possibility, speculation and exhibition. Exploring the possibilities of the public realm, you will bring your individual practices and research interests out of the studio and into the city, elaborating a small research process based on empirical experiences on site. You will work collectively towards a public moment of activation, producing work in response to the site, which could be an action, performance, intervention and beyond. As a research outcome, this public exposition might involve processes of getting out of one’s comfort zone, individual and collective decision making and collective intelligence, and the experience to disturb, interrupt, insert, (dis-)appear (…) in public spheres.

About the lecturers:

Laura von Niederhäusern is a researcher, artist and climate activist situating her practice in the fields of essayistic filmmaking, performative practices and writing. After having concluded her PhD about time perception in the accelerated present, she started to engage off-screen and outdoor with the tangible and tricky realms of public interventions.

Verity-Jane Keefe is a visual artist working with text, archives, video, installation, performance, social structures and sculpture to explore the often-complex relationships between power, people and place. She is an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins where she teaches on the BA Fine Art and is a PhD candidate at ZHdK (Transforming Environments).
